Alright, just a quick update in case you guys are wondering what I'm up to.
So, the thing is, I'm still slaving my ass off in the hospital. Why? Because the course that I am applying for is full for the month of April until June. So I can only attend the course in July. What course you're wondering?
Well, it's a Safety and Health Officer (SHO) course, which will qualify me to become a uhh... Safety and Health Officer. Despite having the word 'health' in the title, it actually focuses more on safety. So if I told a worker to stop smoking at the work place, it's not because I'm worried that he will get lung cancer, but it's mainly because I don't want him to burn the whole place down. That sort of thing. Maybe it's not the most exciting job in the world, but it sure is better than being yelled at for no apparent reason every single morning.
The pay's not as good as my current pay of course, but it will be enough for me to survive in the city.
Anyway, there are 2 types of SHO courses. Full-time, and part-time. The full-time course is a continuous 22-day course, while the part-time course will be held on weekends, so it will take longer to finish the course, approximately 3-4 months. I'm taking the latter, 'cos I'm planning to work on weekdays, and get a little income. I've applied for various healthcare related jobs through jobstreet, and so far I've managed to get shortlisted as a product specialist for a health informatics company. Product specialist basically means I'm gonna be a salesman. And health informatics is basically the IT system for healthcare centres. The pay's not bad, almost as much as I'm making right now, and might be higher if I'm good at it.
So wish me luck guys! Pray that I get the job!
Danny,I've applied to many jobs on jobstreet too!its sickening that I've never gotten any.tired of waiting coz its been a month.I'm still on mc..if I still dnt get any job offer,I wud hv to go bck to da hell coz I cnt bear to b jobless.I've got loans to pay. Cn u tell me wats da job (product specialist) abt?like as u said, being a salesman..does tat mean we hv gotta do sales frm doors to doors?plus IT in healthcare?hw to handle that coz we didn't learn anythg much abt IT n all I hv is just da basic knwledge abt computers..I'm tired of posting me resume to basically all colleges (for da post of lecturer)..life gets screwed being a houseman...it gets even more screwed without bein a houseman..y did I cm into this field ohhh no!!
ReplyDeleteProduct specialist basically means I have to sell the IT software to GPs. You dont need to be really good in IT, cos u're just gonna sell it, not program the whole thing.
DeleteAnyway, if you can afford it, why not take another degree that you really want? I cant, cos I need the money to get married. If im still single, i would've taken up another degree myself.
guys, first of all, where do u guys come from? we are on the same page here dude..im from Hosp Sg Buloh.
ReplyDeleteIm from Hosp Serdang :)
ReplyDeleteDanny, so now you still at the hospital? We're on a same boat..i cant stand being a housemen anymore..im on my first posting right now..been working for 1 month already..im interested in your idea for applying sho..i would like to now more about it.. Can u help me?
ReplyDeleteYep, still at the hospital. waiting to finish my surgical posting in a few weeks, so that i can get this month's salary and use it to pay for the course. also waiting for another interview for the product specialist position in another company. none of these are exactly dream jobs, but they arent hell like housemanship.
ReplyDeleteHey guys. Is it easy to find the job after completing the SHO course? Heard from anyone about that?
ReplyDeletei dont think it'll be easy, but i dont have much choice in the first place anyway.
ReplyDeleteDanny, do you have any plan for post grad studies after quiting housemanship, research/coursework?
ReplyDeleteyou cant do a post-grad study without a full license to practice. unless that post-grad study isnt a medical field. but then again, if u're taking a post-grad program which is not related to medicine, then u need to have a degree in the relevant field. example, u wanna take masters in biology, sure u dont need a license to practice, but u'll need a degree in biology. something like that. but if u know of any post-grad study which we drop-out HOs are qualified to do, please share it here. thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI'll check it up tomorrow. Make a few calls. Later on I'll share it here.
ReplyDeletePost grad study update - MSc in cognitive science by research at Unimas. I'm going to meet the deputy dean, maybe next week, asking for his advice. I don't know if I'm qualified/not but one thing for sure! If I decide to do it, my brain is going to herniate.
ReplyDeleteBtw, how about the SHO? Any good blogs or forum? Check this out. http://aliasmanshepro.blogspot.com

really appreciate ur effort bro. hope to hear some good news soon! thanks! :)
Deleteif there are master programmes for us to do, then this will help a lot of HOs out there who cannot cope with being a doctor anymore.
I think an MBA will offer more opportunity into future business or administrative career. Plus many colleges in US actually offer online post-grad courses. wish u all the best in your future career.
ReplyDeleteIm thinking of getting an MBA sometime later as well. But for the time being, im just focusing on getting a job to secure my source of income. Once things are in order, then i'll start looking around for the post-grad courses. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the wish! :D
