So now that I've gotten a new job, I'll give you guys a rough description of my daily routine:
7.30am: Wake up, get ready for work. Things to bring: pendrive, iPad, a pen, and some blank papers.
8.15am: Get into the car, drive to work. Journey takes roughly 45mins, not due to the distance, but mainly because of the morning traffic.
9.00am: Reach office complex, look for parking space.
9.15am: I'm the first person to arrive at the office despite being 15mins late. Okay, I'm actually the second person to arrive. The first is the cleaner lady. She makes good Caffe Latte by the way.
9.15-10am: Boss still not around, check out facebook and surf the net on my iPad.
10am-12pm: Playing around with the medical software, since I'm still in my induction/training period.
12pm-1pm: Lunch hour. But you can go back to the office at 1.30pm and no one's going to mind.
1pm-6pm: Continue playing around with the medical software. Do a bit of preparation for product presentation next week. Occasionally surf the net on iPad. Regular visit to the loo out of boredom. Keep a serious face and pretend to be busy at my desk.
6pm: Time to go back.
6.30-8pm: Take girlfriend out for dinner.
8-12pm: Watch movies on computer, surf net, play video games, continue being unproductive.
12pm-7.30am: Sleep like a baby.
Basically that's pretty much what I do everyday, since I haven't started selling anything yet. It's not fun, but it's not as busy as my previous routine as a houseman. Oh, and I don't work on weekends.
I'm really glad that your blog existed for those who want to get out from the horrible life of being a houseman. I wish that blog like yours were available last year when I really need it. Wish you all da best
ReplyDeleteThanks bro. :)
DeleteAnyway, so what u're doing now? Im guessing u already finished/almost finished your housemanship?
Hye danny.... I' m amirah, a HO at gov hosp in kelantan... And yes, i'm in hell, i wan to quit HO so badly but i just dont know how to do it... I went to kkm n they give mi strict answer cannot quit, need to finish HO 2 years... I went to jpa n spa since i took jpa scholar n terijat agreement 10 years with gov, n they said it s okey if i quit ho as long as i wrked with gov for 10 yers n doesn matter what job it is... The problm is now with kkm... Could u tell me how u do it? I really appreciate ur help... Thank you danny:)
ReplyDeleteDid you quit?
DeleteHi amirah.
ReplyDeleteWhat the KKM told u was nonsense. Quitting is the only right that a HO has. This has already been explained during the induction period. They should know better.
I guess what they meant is that, if u quit, then u wont be able to get ur full license. That's all.
Anyway, that's a new info regarding the JPA bond. I previously thought all JPA holders must work as a doctor for 10 years. Turned out you guys can work as anything as long as you're with the government. The thing about working with the government is of course, the low salary. But on the plus side, if you work with government, as long as you're not a HO, all of the jobs are easy. 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, Public holidays, allowances, etc. Pretty much a paradise compared to housemanship.
Anyway amirah, i was quite lucky as i didnt sign up for JPA. therefore i didnt have to worry about the bonds. the latest i heard is that u have to pay RM160K if u break the contract.
I dont have much info on what jobs can you do with the government, but you might want to look at the SPA website and see the list of jobs available. One of my HO friend applied through SPA for a Pegawai Tadbir Diplomatik position, and they've called him to take some sort of test or interview.
But do note that applying through SPA means ur application might take months to process, so u're gonna have to wait for a while
The best of luck to u amirah. :)
Hi bro,
ReplyDeleteI'm on a edge of jumping into another boat too! the job is just too much for me! getting scolded for no apparent reason for 36 times on daily basis! Is there any way you can help me find a job in your company? I didn't expect high pay, just enough to make do. kindly e-mail me at che_nasz@yahoo.com or call me 0132914095
For the time being, they're not looking for any new recruits. However, i've just got a reply from an insurance company saying that if im interested, they will arrange an interview. So if i got the job at the insurance company, i'll leave you guys with the details of my current company.
DeleteIf you're interested in doing sales to private GP and medical centres, then this job is suitable for u. :)
Thanks bro. Owe you one big time. I'll buy you drinks if we ever met.
Deleteit's nothing bro. let's hope for the best. :)
DeleteAmirah's here
ReplyDeleteThank you Danny for ur explaination... I still had a little bit of scared feeling, i'm afraid with a lot of things... My biggest obstacle is my family, they realy2 want me to be a doctor... For them at least one doctor in family... How's about ur family danny? Are they supported ur decission?
Hi Amirah.
ReplyDeleteI took months to convince my family that quitting housemanship is the better decision.
They are still having a hard time accepting my decision, mainly because they do not understand how hard it is to become a doctor. They are still hoping that I would continue my housemanship, despite having numerous discussions on the matter. It's really frustating.
So what did I do? I quit without telling them. I got myself a job, and maybe after a few months, I'll tell them the truth, and they're gonna see that I can still survive after quitting my housemanship, and how much happier I am.
It's not easy discussing this with your parents, but you have to try. You have to let them know that you're old enough to know what's really best for you. You gotta let them know how much you're suffering doing your housemanship, and you're not feeling happy at all. And if they're still stubborn, then just quit without telling them, like I did. You're gonna find another job sooner or later. We're living in Malaysia, where even beggars can get RM3000 per month, where even SPM leavers can drive a Honda Civic. People in this country die because they eat too much, not because there's not enough to eat. So dont worry about starving to death after quitting.
Danny,
DeleteI really admire your positive attitude in life.
Lets work together to prove that being a doctor is not everything.
This Malaysian mentality have to change, somehow.
Keep updating bro...your posts are really encouraging, and I'm sure others find it too.
Best regards,
Cardipin
Hey bro,
DeleteBeing positive is probably the last word you should use to describe me.. haha. If I'm really being positive, I would've continued doing my housemanship, thinking that everything will get better someday. :p
I'm just being idealistic. It's not good to be too idealistic, as you would sooner or later find out that reality is a bitch, and nothing is ideal in real life. It does however, help you to live by your principles and beliefs. It gives you hope, it gives you courage. Not the courage to endure your housemanship, but the courage to take a leap of faith.
I'm not encouraging people to quit their housemanship, but I just want them to know that quitting is not the end of everything. It's a wide world out there, with thousands of opportunities. There's no telling what you could be someday. We're all still young, it's never too late to start a new life.
Thanks for your kind comments bro. :)
I'm quitting too in a few months. I am planning to still work with government since I am bonded and have no money to pay them. But I have a question regarding quitting process. How's the process? Have to do letter or go JPA SPA or KKM?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
I'd love to help, but I'm not really sure myself as I opted to just inform the admin that I wont be coming to work.
DeleteWhat I do know, is that you can either submit a 1-month resignation notice, or a 24-hour resignation notice, to your Pengarah Hospital or Timbalan Pengarah. I'm not sure if the process differs in other hospitals. Then the hospital will handle the process with KKM.
Hey, i 'm in my second week of posting in medicine. Sick of the job n no interest in it, planning too quit n my parents are ok with it, though bit of disappointed. I'm worry abt the jon and wat lies ahead as i have financial difficulties. Planning to take up master programme in private university like imu n become a lecturer. Is it possible? Do they require housemanship experience?
ReplyDeletehi, it depends on the course u're taking. most universities would require that u complete your housemanship before enrolling, as they need you to have the full registration with MMC. other courses on the other hand, will need that u have a degree of relevant field to the master course u're about to take. but still, you can try to enquire with the universities regarding what course is available for u to take.
DeleteHello Danny....
ReplyDeleteI was on my 3rd week of HO at surgery department. I keep on telling myself one day I'll manage to be better than now so I decided to keep on working.
But everyday whenever I leavee my house at 5am and only come back at 10 or more (Tagging period) I feel unhappy and in the work I am more interested in filling up forms, talk to the patients about regular thing (other than those clerking thingy) & give emotional support. I am not interested in presenting case, or doing procedure (which I hate the most because not even a single procedure I managed to do successfully), or attend a boring talk lol. And I cannot really handle these scolding or rudeness just because I x pandai present or refer.
Today I ran from the ward without notifying other. Usually I wont do this but since I being nice oso got the payback like this, it'll be no different if I started to become a bad person. I am just so unhappy and really need to go away from them all.
I really want to quit but since I am bonded with JPA, I feel lost. But reading comments here bring back slight light, maybe there is hope? I can work any job that has normal office hours. doctor is just not for me. but it's easy to say than to do. my family all want me to be a doctor, no matter how much i told them i am so unhappy they think this is just a phase. i don't know when they will understand that if i continue with this i will eventually become crazy.... they said that if i broke contract with JPA there'll be tons of money to pay. but i wanna ask, if i continue to work under gov then can i pay them back slowly? just as long as i work under them right?
I understand your feelings soooo much. Me too trapped in the same boat as yours. Exactly in the same boat. Apa reply from jpa when you said you wanna quit? Can you please let me know
DeleteHi, currently I'm having the same dilemma too. So how's the jpa part? If anyone know how it goes, Pls Email me- smile.happy92@hotmail.com

Hi Charlene,
ReplyDeleteLike any other job, there will be things that u love, and things that you hate about housemanship. It's hard to find a job that you will love 100% nowadays. So think back carefully about your decision to quit. I know it's stressful, but ask yourself what is it that you really want to do? Dont think about the scoldings, long hours, etc. Cos it's gonna be the same everywhere else. The corporate world is getting tougher nowadays, even clerks have to stay until late night sometimes.
Anyway, about the jpa bond. If im not mistaken, once u quit housemanship it will be considered as breaking the contract. The one where u can just continue working in government doing any other job is for MARA scholarship. Perhaps u can try calling JPA to clarify?
Best regards,
Danny.
I'm thinking of quitting too.is it true that if ure under mara scholar u can work anywhere in gov n u dun.have to pay them?
ReplyDeleteThankss pls answer me :)
Im not so sure. Try calling MARA. Im under PTPTN so I dont know much about JPA and MARA.
